Tara Park Victorious at the Sydney Royal

Summary of The Land report by Cara Jeffrey

A merino ewe judged as possessing “purity of fibre” from the head to the hindquarter has taken out the prestigious Supreme Merino Exhibit at the Sydney Royal Show.

The six tooth ewe from the Evans’ Tara Park Stud Boorowa, won ahead of the Supreme Merino Ram. The Tara Park ewe named "Catherine", to coincide with the Royal visit, rose through the ranks as Champion fine wool March shorn Merino ewe, before being sashed grand champion fine wool ewe.

She then took the Supreme Merino Ewe title before nabbing Supreme Merino Exhibit. The ewe tested 18.7 micron wool, 2.5 SD, 13.4 SD & 99.8pc comfort factor. Judge Malcolm Peake, Bogo Merinos, Bookham, said the decision to sash the Tara Park Exhibit as the Supreme Merino Exhibit was a unanimous one among the panel of six judges.

“The ewe is well put together, with a very nice barrel and good, long stapled wool, the wool is very even all over” Mr Peake said. Fellow judge Drew Chapman, Hinesville Merino Stud, Dalgety, said “no matter where it was opened the wool was just as rich”.

Earlier this year the ewe was judged Supreme Ewe at the Great Southern Supreme Show Canberra and Supreme Ewe at Boorowa Show. "Catherine" is by prominent sire "Tara Park 4202", which sired the 2013 Stonehaven Cup team from Tara Park as well as the 2013 Tom Culley winning ram. Mr Evans said he knew "Catherine" would keep the judges honest.

Tara Park Stud had a team of two rams & two ewes at the show, from which they collected seven broad ribbons.

South West Slopes Stud Merino Breeders Field Day 2014

2014 SOUTH WEST SLOPES STUD MERINO BREEDERS FIELD DAY

Tara Park Merino Stud, Boorowa won the South West Slopes 2014 Merino Ram of the year.

Crowds flocked to Galong for the annual SWS Stud merino Field Day on Thursday 4th September, the day drew a large crowd of Merino enthusiasts with over 50 studs on show.

The stud events were judged by Mark Prendergast, Cottage Park Merino Stud, Cooma & Chris Clonan, Alfoxton Merino Stud, Armidale. Speaking on behalf of the judges, Mr Clonan said they gave the nod to Tara Park for a young ram with outstanding conformation and bright gutsy wool.

The two tooth ram was a son of Tara Park King and measured 17.8 micron fibre diameter. Tara Park King had been judged Merino Ram of the Year at the 2012 SWS Stud Merino Field Day held at “Iandra” Greenethorpe.

Many regarded the line-up at the 2014 GSSM Show & Sale as one of the best ever seen at the first major Merino event for the year. Tara Park, Boorowa rose to the fore and claimed both the grand champion ram and grand champion ewe, having done so in 2012 & 2009. This left the judges with two exhibits from the stud to select their supreme exhibit from.

In the end, they went for the ram for his overall outlook and length of body “he’s got terrific scale with good wool, and a terrific head and muzzle” one of the judges said. Tara Park co-principal Guy Evans said the previously unshown four tooth was by influential sire TP4202, he had earlier been awarded champion March-shorn fine/medium wool ram and grand champion March shorn ram. He tested 19.1 micron SD 3.1 CV 16.2 CF 99.7.

The stud’s champion ewe was also be TP4202, she was sashed champion March shorn fine wool ewe and grand champion March shorn ewe of the show, and tested 18.7 micron 99.8 CF. The duo were awarded the Best Pair of the show.

“It is a very pleasing result for us given the quality of the sheep on show this year” Guy Evans said.
